About the Workshop

> Workshop will be held daily from 9am - 4pm.

This five-day workshop combines scientific writing guidance, live demonstrations, and hands-on manuscript development using Claude and the GBD Model Context Protocol (MCP). Each participant develops a manuscript on their own topic, directing the analysis and writing while using Claude to query GBD estimates, draft, and revise. Structured templates and daily faculty feedback support participants at every stage, from initial outline to complete draft.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for existing GBD collaborators who are planning to develop a national or subnational paper using GBD estimates. It is particularly relevant for those who:

  • Want to strengthen their interpretation and communication of GBD results
  • Are interested in using AI responsibly in scientific research and writing
  • Are seeking practical guidance on developing a manuscript and navigating the publication process

Each participant will focus on a selected location and an area of the GBD hierarchy, such as a cause group, specific cause or risk factor.

What You'll Take Away

  • A first draft of your GBD manuscript in a targeted journal-style template, with standard GBD tables and figures generated through the GBD MCP
  • A verified Results section, with a clear outline for the remaining sections
  • A roadmap for taking your initial draft to a more complete manuscript
  • A reusable set of prompts, skills and workflows for developing future GBD papers

5-Day Workshop Program

DayThemeSession Objectives
Day 1
Foundations: Strategy, Metrics & Responsible AI

Explore the responsible and ethical use of AI in scientific writing, including author responsibility, validation, confidentiality, journal guidance and GBD publication policies. Build a strong foundation in GBD metrics and begin developing an AI-assisted workflow for your manuscript.

Day 2
Results: From GBD Estimates to a Results Section

Transform GBD estimates into a clear and accurate Results section supported by verified tables, figures and key messages.

Day 3
Argument & Framing: Discussion, Introduction & Abstract

Strengthen the structure and framing of your manuscript by connecting key findings with GBD evidence, developing the Discussion and Introduction, and ensuring claims and references are well supported.

Day 4
Methods, Appendix & Verification

Strengthen the accuracy and transparency of your manuscript by refining the Methods and Appendix, applying GATHER guidance, and systematically verifying data, metrics, references and claims. Use AI-assisted review alongside source materials to identify and address inconsistencies across the full draft.

Day 5
Refinement, Next Steps & the Road to Submission

Refine and strengthen your manuscript through final review, revision and journal styling, while preparing key submission materials and considering AI-use disclosure. Finalize your first draft with faculty guidance and develop a clear roadmap for the next steps towards submission and peer review.
